Travel influencer arrested for a $500,000 scam against Aerolíneas Argentinas: fake miles and tickets to Rome, Madrid, Cancun, and Disney
A travel influencer has been arrested for allegedly scamming Aerolíneas Argentinas out of $500,000 through fraudulent mileage schemes.
On Tuesday, federal justice officials executed a search warrant and arrested a man suspected of defrauding Aerolíneas Argentinas of nearly $500,000 by acquiring millions of airline miles and redeeming them for international tickets over the last few years. Reports from the company indicate that the fraud involved illicit maneuvers within the AR Plus mileage purchase system, where the suspect modified payment amounts and credited miles inappropriately.
As a response to the fraudulent activities, Aerolíneas Argentinas quickly took measures including canceling the fraudulent transactions, blocking accounts involved, invalidating issued tickets, and placing account holders on a watchlist to prevent them from flying. The fraudulent system alteration is alleged to have occurred between December 2023 and January 2025, leading to a specialized cybercrime unit investigation (UFECI) initiated by the airline’s findings.
The implications of this scam are significant not just for Aerolíneas Argentinas, which faces financial losses and compromised system integrity, but also for the wider policing and regulatory measures regarding airline loyalty programs. The case could prompt a closer examination of travel discounts and incentives that may be exploited by potential fraudsters, ultimately affecting the industry's safer practices and trustworthiness.
