The women’s football team loses to Slovakia in the debut of the World Cup qualification B league away match
The Latvian women's football team faced a defeat against Slovakia in their debut Match of the World Cup qualification B league.
Latvia's women's football team, having won their C league subgroup in the UEFA Nations League last year, stepped up to a stronger league for the World Cup qualifiers, facing tougher opponents such as Slovakia, who are ranked significantly higher in the FIFA rankings. The Slovakian team is positioned 51st, while Latvia holds the 107th place, making the competition fierce as they also face teams like Portugal and Finland, which participated in last year's European Championship.
In the first half of the match, Latvia maintained a relatively even footing against Slovakia with a ball possession of 61% to 39%, though Slovakia proved more effective in their strikes with two goals from Patrícia Hmirová in the 7th minute and Martina Surnovská stretching the lead in the 32nd minute. Despite Latvia managing three attempts on goal compared to Slovakia's four, they were unable to convert these chances into any goals.
The second half started positively for Latvia, prompting a moment of hope as Anastasija scored in the 56th minute after a well-coordinated play involving Annija Anderson and Santa Vuškāne. However, the initial effort was not enough to overcome the deficit, leading to a learning experience for the Latvian team as they adapt to the higher level of competition in their league debut.
