Säpo: The security situation has further deteriorated
Säpo warns that the security situation in Sweden has worsened due to the Iran war, increasing the risk of attacks against American, Israeli targets, and vulnerable groups like Swedish Jews and exiled Iranians.
The Swedish Security Service (Säpo) has indicated a further deterioration in the security situation due to developments related to the Iran war. According to Säpo's operational chief, Fredrik Hallström, military operations conducted by Israel and the US against Iran have escalated threats not only to those nations but have also extended to Sweden, increasing the risk of attacks against specific communities within the country. Despite acknowledging the heightened risks, Säpo has not increased its overall terror alert level, which currently remains at a level three on a five-point scale, indicating a raised threat environment where an attack could occur.
Säpo assesses that while Sweden has not become a primary target, it may still serve as a venue for potential attacks directed at American, Israeli, or Jewish interests. The threats focus more on the broader geopolitical context rather than being exclusively about Sweden. Hallström emphasizes that the threats tend to target countries involved in the conflict or minority groups within Sweden, hinting that while the risk exists, the operational focus is not primarily on Swedish soil.
Moreover, the agency's assessment stresses the importance of vigilance among communities at risk, particularly Jews and exiled Iranians. It suggests a need for awareness and preparedness within these groups, as they may become unintentional frontlines in conflict driven by external geopolitical tensions. The situation underscores the complexities of global conflicts impacting domestic security and community safety in Sweden.
