Millions in Healthcare / We Spend More on Medications, Yet Do Not Consider Their Benefits. If We Want to Acquire New Ones, the System Needs to Be Cleansed

A report reveals that spending on medications in Slovakia has drastically increased, surpassing the state budget due to poorly implemented health reforms.

Analysts from the Value for Money Unit explain in their latest review that expenditures on medications have surged sharply, consistently exceeding the state budget by hundreds of millions of euros. While annual spending on medicines was around one billion euros before 2019, it rose to 1.65 billion euros by 2024. This significant increase is attributed not just to the COVID-19 pandemic or inflation, but largely to unfinished reforms by politicians and officials in the health department, notably under the leadership of Andrej Kalavský and subsequently Vladimír Lengvarský.

Moreover, state officials note that despite the notable rise in spending on medications, the real benefits for patients remain unknown, and there is a lack of systematic data collection regarding these benefits. Such data is crucial for determining which medications should be included in the healthcare system. However, public control is hindered by the practices of pharmaceutical companies, which guard the confidentiality of information regarding the benefits and actual prices of medications, leaving the ministry at a disadvantage in negotiations.

The article underscores the need for transparency and accountability in the healthcare system as rampant spending continues without adequate oversight or assessment of medication efficacy. The findings highlight a critical gap that must be addressed to ensure that healthcare funds are effectively utilized, ultimately improving patient outcomes and ensuring that new, valuable medications can be accessed by those in need.
