Estonia has submitted a note to Russia, reminding it of icebreaker regulations in territorial waters

Estonia has formally reminded Russia of strict regulations concerning icebreakers in its territorial waters following an unauthorized entry by the Russian icebreaker 'Murmansk.'

The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian chargé d'affaires to formally issue a note concerning the regulations governing Russian icebreakers operating within its territorial waters. Minister Margus Cahkna emphasized that there are clear rules in place which must be adhered to, particularly during seasons when ships are escorted by icebreakers. The communication aims to ensure compliance in order to prevent further violations, stating that all parties must respect these established protocols.

On February 28th, the Russian icebreaker 'Murmansk' entered Estonian territorial waters in the Gulf of Finland near Vaindlo Island without the necessary permission, reportedly to assist an ice-locked oil tanker, 'Olympic Friendship,' registered under the Marshall Islands. This unauthorized entry not only raised concerns about maritime regulations but also highlighted potential lapses in communication, as neither the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs nor the Estonian Navy received prior notification of the icebreaker's entry into their territorial waters.

Cahkna’s remarks underline the importance of maritime law and international cooperation, especially in the context of heightened regional tensions. The incident reflects the complexities of territorial waters management and the need for adherence to established maritime rules to avoid confrontations in the strategically significant Baltic Sea region, particularly as both nations navigate their diplomatic relations in the wake of broader geopolitical affects.
