Breaking: Kang Seon-woo and Kim Kyung Arrested over Allegations of Illegal Political Donations of 100 Million Won

Kang Seon-woo, an independent member of the National Assembly, along with former Seoul city councilor Kim Kyung, has been arrested for alleged violations of political fundraising laws involving a 100 million won donation.

Kang Seon-woo, an independent member of the National Assembly formerly with the Democratic Party, and Kim Kyung, a former Seoul city councilor, have been arrested following the issuance of arrest warrants related to allegations of political fundraising violations, including bribery and evidence tampering. The Seoul Central District Court determined there is a risk of evidence destruction, hence the decision to approve the warrants. This incident marks the second case of an incumbent member of the parliament being arrested in the 22nd National Assembly, after a previous case involving Representative Kwon Seong-dong.

The accusations stem from a meeting between Kang and Kim on January 7, 2022, at a hotel in Seoul’s Yongsan district, where they allegedly discussed a 100 million won political donation in exchange for a nomination to run in local elections. Police reports indicate that Kang was aware of the money's intent and admitted to using it for financing a home. Kim reportedly succeeded in securing his candidacy under Kang's influence, which raised further suspicions regarding the legitimacy of the transaction and contribution.

Kang, however, firmly denied the allegations, stating that he only learned about the money being in a shopping bag after three months and had attempted to return it multiple times. Despite these claims, he and Kim engaged in public disputes over the nature of the donations leading up to the warrant's issuance, an approach criticized as ineffective in protecting their legal standing. This ongoing case highlights the broader issues of corruption within South Korean politics, as allegations of bribery and irregularities in political funding become a growing concern for voters and authorities alike.
