Construction project at Paketposthalle: Million-dollar dispute over noise between high-rise investor and Backstage
A significant dispute has erupted over noise protection measures between Backstage cultural center and Büschl Group, the investor behind a high-rise residential project near the site.
Hans-Georg Stocker, the co-founder and managing director of the Backstage cultural center, previously expressed optimism about reaching an agreement with the Büschl Group regarding noise protection for the cultural venue as they plan to build two high-rise towers adjacent to it. However, tensions have since escalated, with Stocker now stating that the relationship has deteriorated significantly and that negotiations are at an impasse. He accuses the Büschl Group of obstructing necessary measures to safeguard the Backstage during the construction of the new residential area.
The original plans for the redevelopment of the Paketpost area were laid out last summer, sparking interest from various stakeholders, including the Büschl Group. The proposal involves the construction of two towers, each standing 155 meters tall, alongside the existing cultural center. Despite initial discussions aimed at reaching a consensus on noise levels and impact, no formal agreement has been achieved, leading to heightened frustrations from Stocker.
The situation highlights broader issues of urban development, especially the balance between new construction projects and the protection of existing cultural institutions. The city council's recent approval of the site's statutory resolution reflects a commitment to development, but it raises critical questions regarding the future of cultural venues like Backstage and their ability to coexist with new high-density housing developments.
