Major terrorist leader eliminated in African state

Somali forces have killed a senior Al-Shabaab leader during a targeted operation in the Lower Shabelle region with international support.

In a significant military operation, Somali forces have successfully eliminated a high-ranking member of the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab, named Kamaludin Yunis Mohamed, in the Lower Shabelle region. The operation was led by the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) and took place in the Hantiwadaag area of Awdheegle district, with assistance from international partners, demonstrating the collaborative efforts in combating terrorism in Somalia.

The eliminated leader, who was also known by various aliases such as Salim Nur Sheikh Abdirahin and Abdullahi Hassan Ali, was identified as a critical operative responsible for planning numerous attacks within Somalia, including a notable assault on Godka Jilacow prison in Mogadishu in October 2025. This prison attack, marked by a prolonged siege involving militants impersonating security forces, resulted in significant casualties and highlighted the ongoing threat posed by Al-Shabaab militants in the region.

The successful targeting of such a high-profile terrorist leader underscores the determination of Somali authorities and their international counterparts to curtail the operations of Al-Shabaab, thereby enhancing regional security. It also reflects the broader strategic efforts to stabilize Somalia, an area that has faced years of conflict and insecurity due to the activities of militant groups. Elimination of leaders in such organizations is pivotal for the long-term fight against terrorism in the Horn of Africa.
