Operations suspended at Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant – Rosatom

Operations at Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant have been suspended due to nearby US and Israeli airstrikes, as stated by Russia's Rosatom.

The Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in Iran has temporarily halted its operations amid escalating military actions from the US and Israel in the surrounding area. Rosatom, the Russian state nuclear corporation responsible for the plant's construction, reported that the suspension was necessary due to ongoing threats posed by airstrikes that, while not directly targeting the facility, create a risk for both the plant and its personnel. As of now, 639 Russian staff remain at the site, though communication with Iran's nuclear leadership has been lost, adding to concerns regarding the safety of other nuclear projects in Iran.

Alexey Likhachev, the Director General of Rosatom, emphasized that the situation around the power plant is precarious, noting that explosions are being heard within a few kilometers of the site. He acknowledged that while the strikes are aimed at military targets nearby, the increased military activity generates a significant threat to the nuclear facility. The implications of this development are serious, as it raises concerns about the safety and security of nuclear materials amid regional tensions.

Despite these risks, Likhachev reassured that control over the situation at the Bushehr plant is being maintained. The uncertainty surrounding operations and future communications with Iranian nuclear authority poses a challenge. Should the military actions continue, there may be broader implications not only for the safety of the nuclear power facility but also for Iran's nuclear program as a whole, which could have international repercussions given the ongoing geopolitical dynamics.
