A pensioner tragically died after slipping off a harbour wall into the sea in Lyme Regis while his wife looked on helplessly.
A pensioner in his 70s lost his life after falling into the sea from the harbour wall at The Cobb in Lyme Regis, an incident witnessed by his wife. Both were reportedly walking along the wall when he slipped, resulting in his plunge into the water while his wife, who fell but remained on the precipice, could only watch in horror. Emergency services were contacted immediately, and a lifeboat crew from Lyme Regis arrived within minutes to assist, but due to challenging sea conditions, they initially struggled to reach the man.
The rescue operation proved difficult as rescuers faced significant waves and deteriorating conditions. However, one lifeboatman managed to reach the victim by entering the water from the end of the harbour wall. Despite the prompt response and efforts by the lifeboat crew, the man was unfortunately unable to be resuscitated after being pulled from the sea. He was pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife received medical treatment for apparent injuries sustained during the incident.
