Protestant Media: Only Cuts in the 'Beloved Journalism'

The Protestant Bishop of Bavaria, Christian Kopp, addressed concerns about the funding cuts for the Evangelical Press Association of Bavaria, reaffirming that financial support will not be completely eliminated despite changes in media and financial conditions.

During a press club meeting in Munich, Protestant Bishop Christian Kopp contested claims that the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria (ELKB) would completely eliminate funding for the Evangelical Press Association of Bavaria (EPV). This statement comes in light of the church's announcement from mid-February, indicating a potential termination of their contract with the EPV by the end of the year, which would affect over 50 employees. Kopp expressed his discontent with the ongoing discourse and the media's portrayal of the situation.

The ELKB's announcement generated significant controversy, highlighting the church's intention to sever the existing funding agreement with the EPV, which involves annual contributions of €2.6 million. This decision is based on what they described as altered 'financial and media frameworks.' While the church clarified that some entities would remain funded, specifically the EPD news agency and portions of broadcast work, it nonetheless reflects a strategic shift in how the church plans to manage its communications.

Looking ahead to 2024, the ELKB aims to strengthen and realign its own organizational communication strategies instead of continuing with what they deem outdated support to the media. This move has sparked debates about the future of Protestant journalism in Bavaria and the potential implications for media diversity within the region, raising concerns amongst journalists and stakeholders about maintaining an independent press in light of reduced funding opportunities.
