Israel: The repatriation of doctors stranded abroad due to war with cargo ships
Israeli authorities are using cargo ships to repatriate essential medical personnel stranded abroad due to the outbreak of an aerial war with Iran.
Following the recent onset of hostilities between Israel and Iran, Israeli authorities have initiated a notable operation to repatriate doctors who have found themselves stranded overseas. This unprecedented situation has arisen due to the disruption of regular travel lines caused by the military conflict, compelling the Israeli transport company ZIM Shipping to arrange for cargo ships to assist in this humanitarian effort. As of now, 40 doctors have returned on two trips, with additional voyages planned to bring back hundreds of doctors to treat casualties resulting from Iranian missile strikes.
The operation is a collaborative effort involving the Israeli Ministry of Transport, major hospitals in Israel, and the ZIM Shipping company. The officials noted that the cargo vessels are making trips between Limassol in Cyprus and the Israeli port of Haifa, facilitating the urgent return of crucial medical staff. This method has been deemed the most efficient way to ensure the return of medical personnel at a time when civilian flights are not available.
The need for repatriation comes at a critical juncture as Israeli hospitals prepare to treat victims of the ongoing conflict. The return of the medical personnel is expected to bolster the capacity of the healthcare system, which is facing increased pressure due to injuries sustained from the ongoing military actions. Such logistics highlight the significant impact of the conflict not just militarily but also on civil services like healthcare, demonstrating the complexity of managing resources during times of war.
