Brothers aged 7 and 11 drown in a reservoir after rains in Araripina, PE

Two brothers drowned in a reservoir in the rural community of Serra do Simões, in Araripina, Pernambuco, after heavy rains increased water levels.

Two young brothers, identified as 7-year-old Janderson and 11-year-old Josilan, tragically drowned in a reservoir located in the rural community of Serra do Simões, Araripina, Pernambuco. This incident occurred on the afternoon of Monday (2) after recent heavy rains led to a significant rise in water levels in the reservoir, which had accumulated a large volume of water. Unfortunately, the boys did not know how to swim, which contributed to the drowning tragedy when they entered the reservoir to play.

Local residents attempted to rescue the children and rushed them to the Araripina Emergency Care Unit (UPA) where they were unfortunately pronounced dead upon arrival, having shown no vital signs. The incident highlights the potential dangers posed by increased water levels in rural areas following heavy rainfall, especially for young children who may be unaware of the risks associated with such bodies of water.

The Pernambuco Civil Police have stated that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the drownings. The Araripina Police Station has already initiated inquiries to understand how the tragic event took place and to ensure child safety in the community. This event raises important discussions about safety measures for children in rural areas, especially during periods of heavy rain when water hazards are more prevalent.
