Turaki-led PDP not holding congress in South West β Official
The PDP in Nigeria's South West has officially denied any plans for a congress, calling circulating reports false.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South West region of Nigeria has issued a public statement denying that any congress has been scheduled in the area. Sanya Atofarati, the Southwest Zonal Publicity Secretary, labeled the rumors as 'false and mischievous' and urged the public and party members to ignore any such claims. This denial comes in light of reports circulating about essential party congresses, which were asserted to be planned across various South West states.
Atofarati clarified that there had been no approval or announcement from the party regarding state congresses in the Southwest. The situation arises against the backdrop of a leadership crisis within the PDP, which has seen the party split into two factions: one led by Samuel Anyanwu and the other by Taminu Turaki SAN. Atofarati further pointed out that five of the six South West states have elected and legally established party executives, eliminating the necessity for a congress in those areas, with the exception of Osun State, which is currently in a different situation.
The implications of such a statement highlight the ongoing tensions within the PDP, as any attempt to hold congresses could exacerbate the division between opposing factions. By denying the existence of planned congresses, the party aims to maintain stability and unity among its members in the South West, as they face competition and challenges from rival political factions in Nigeria's political landscape.
