Jukka-Pekka Kokkonen has resigned from his position as chairman of the Board of Finnish Economists amid allegations of inappropriate conduct during a student event organized by Aalto University on March 1. The resignation was confirmed in an official statement from Suomen Ekonomit, wherein Kokkonen expressed his regret over the incident and its potential impact on the economist community.
In his statement, Kokkonen emphasized the importance of the economist community to him and expressed a wish that the fallout from the incident would be minimized. He acknowledged that the role of chairman is significant and valuable, and stated that, given the circumstances, he no longer deemed himself fit to serve in that capacity. The incident and his subsequent resignation underscore the expectations of ethical behavior within professional associations in Finland.
The Executive Director, Jari Elo, also reiterated the organization's commitment to ethical conduct, stating that all members and representatives of the association adhere to a code of conduct against inappropriate behavior. Elo reinforced that the economist community maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards such issues, highlighting a strong stance on maintaining professionalism within its ranks. In the interim, Kokkonen's duties have been handed over to the deputy chairman, as the organization seeks to stabilize its leadership following this incident.
