Georgian suspect charged with espionage: Initial prosecution for illegal entry and stay in the country

A Georgian man has been charged with illegal entry and suspected espionage after being arrested at Athens International Airport.

A 36-year-old Georgian national was arrested at Athens International Airport yesterday as a suspect in an espionage case. Authorities have initiated criminal proceedings against him for illegal entry and residence in Greece, leading to his appearance before a single-member court. The counter-terrorism service will further investigate the espionage allegations against him, which are linked to his previous scrutiny by the National Intelligence Service.

The suspect is of Azerbaijani descent and has reportedly been under observation by security services for some time. Investigations have yielded findings that reinforce suspicions regarding his involvement in espionage activities. A representative from the Greek Intelligence Service (EYP) revealed to ERT News that the suspect had been seen near the naval port of Souda taking photographs of military vessels, raising concerns about potential threats to national security.

As the investigation continues, there is still a lack of information regarding the contents of the suspect's mobile phone and camera findings, which could shed more light on his activities. The case highlights ongoing issues of espionage and national security within Greece, especially concerning foreign nationals potentially engaging in reconnaissance that could jeopardize the country's safety and diplomatic relations.
