Spain requests 6.5 billion euros from Brussels for the sixth payment of the recovery plan

Spain has formally requested 6.5 billion euros from the European Commission as part of its recovery plan following the economic impact of the pandemic.

Spain has submitted a request to the European Commission for an additional payment of 6.5 billion euros as the sixth installment of its recovery plan. This sum includes 5.5 billion euros in grants and the remainder in loans, as announced by the Minister of Economy, Carlos Cuerpo, shortly before the official submission in Brussels. This new request is part of Spain’s strategy to bolster its economy amidst the ongoing financial repercussions of the pandemic.

To date, Spain has successfully received 55 billion euros in grants from the European recovery fund, which is set up to support EU countries in recovering from the economic damage caused by COVID-19. The total allocation assigned to Spain is 79.8 billion euros, alongside an additional 22.8 billion euros available in loans. The Minister’s announcement emphasized the urgency for the government to expedite its efforts to request the full amount by the end of August to maximize the allocated funds, which are crucial for sustaining economic recovery efforts.

The initial funds received have been pivotal for Spain in addressing the immediate financial challenges posed by the pandemic, including supporting businesses and preserving jobs. As Spain navigates the ongoing economic landscape and prepares for future uncertainties, securing the full recovery plan funding is vital for restoring economic stability and growth in the post-pandemic era. Additionally, the European Commission has eight weeks to assess whether Spain has met the requirements tied to this payment, indicating the conditional nature of such funds and the importance of compliance for future assistance.
