Relative of one of the most expensive plants in the world discovered in ES and is already at risk

A new species of plant, Philodendron quartziticola, has been discovered in Espírito Santo, Brazil, and is already facing threats despite being newly described.

Researchers have recently identified a new species of plant native to the Atlantic Forest in the mountainous region of Espírito Santo, Brazil, named Philodendron quartziticola. This plant belongs to the Araceae family, which includes well-known species like taioba and ornamental plants such as anthuriums and pothos. The discovery highlights the ecological importance of the Capixaba mountains as a significant center of biodiversity and endemism within the Atlantic Forest, even in regions that are considered to be relatively well-known by science.

The unique features of Philodendron quartziticola include its long, narrow leaves and a striking reddish coloration on the underside, which attracted the attention of researchers during their studies. The findings were published in the scientific journal Phytotaxa, underlining the ongoing botanical research initiatives conducted by institutions such as the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden (JBRJ), the National Institute of the Atlantic Forest (INMA), and the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES).

Despite being a newly discovered species, the Philodendron quartziticola is already facing risks, bringing attention to conservation issues associated with rare flora in the region. This discovery not only contributes to the understanding of biodiversity in the Atlantic Forest but also raises concerns about the sustainability of such unique species amidst ongoing environmental threats. Scientists emphasize the need for preservation efforts to ensure the survival of this and similar species that are vital to the ecosystem.
