Former mayor investigated for embezzlement of flood funds in RS released after court decision
Former Lajeado mayor Marcelo Caumo was released by Federal Justice after being arrested due to allegations of misappropriation of public funds for flood recovery in Rio Grande do Sul.
Marcelo Caumo, the former mayor of Lajeado, Brazil, was recently released from custody after Federal Justice ordered his release following his arrest during a Federal Police operation investigating the possible embezzlement of public funds designated for flood recovery in Rio Grande do Sul in 2024. Caumo, who served as mayor from 2017 to 2024, was taken into custody alongside Lorena Mercalli, a director of one of the companies under investigation for their involvement in the alleged fraud.
The investigation focuses on potential misappropriations related to funds allocated to assist in recovering from severe flooding that impacted the region, causing considerable damage. This case does not involve the current administration, according to authorities. Following his arrest, Caumo was held at the Penitentiary in Canoas near Porto Alegre. His lawyer confirmed that he was released after providing a statement to the authorities, indicating a potentially complex legal situation that may still unfold.
Caumo's temporary detention was set for five days, and upon release, both he and Mercalli are expected to navigate the ongoing investigation which remains a significant issue for local governance and public trust in the management of recovery efforts. This case underscores the critical scrutiny of how public funds are handled, particularly in disaster recovery scenarios. It raises concerns about accountability and transparency within public office operations in Brazil, especially in the context of emergency responses.
