The Latvian government has announced a three million euro grant aimed at strengthening security at the external borders of the European Union, specifically targeting five municipalities: Ludza, Krāslava, Balvi, Alūksne, and Augšdaugava. This funding will be proportionate to the length of each municipality's external border, as explained by the Ministry of Finance. This allocation is set within the 2026 budget and aims to enhance the capacity of local authorities to manage border security effectively.

The grant distribution is directly linked to the length of the external borders assigned to each municipality. For instance, Ludza, which has the longest external border of 141 kilometers, will receive the largest portion of funding at 987,164 euros. In contrast, municipalities with shorter borders, like Alūksne, which spans 54.7 kilometers, will receive 382,964 euros. This funding approach emphasizes the government's strategy of allocating resources based on the geographical realities faced by these municipalities regarding border management.
