Catholic Church Moves to Strengthen 2027 Elections in Taraba
The Catholic Diocese of Jalingo has initiated a program aimed at enhancing electoral integrity and curbing irregularities ahead of the 2027 general elections in Taraba State.
The Catholic Diocese of Jalingo has launched an initiative focused on addressing electoral irregularities and enhancing the credibility of the upcoming 2027 general elections in Taraba State. This initiative was presented during the churchβs 22nd Biennial General Assembly held in Jalingo, where a diverse group of clerics, political leaders, and community stakeholders gathered to discuss a collaborative approach to ensuring credible electoral processes. The chosen theme for this assembly, 'Church-State Partnership for Credible Elections in Taraba,' highlights the focus on electoral integrity.
Bishop Charles M. Hammawa of the Jalingo Diocese expressed concerns regarding the frequent occurrence of flawed and contentious elections in Nigeria, emphasizing that such irregularities have led to significant disruptions in governance and social stability. He stated that it is crucial for both the Church and the State to work together to protect the integrity of the democratic process, while maintaining the necessary constitutional separation between them. This partnership aims not to endorse any political agendas but to ensure fairer electoral practices.
The announcement comes at a pivotal time as Nigeria gears up for its next round of elections in 2027, which will require a concerted effort from various sectors to promote transparency and accountability. The Catholic Church's involvement could serve as a potential catalyst for other faith-based organizations and civil societies in amplifying the call for genuine electoral reforms and upholding democratic principles across the nation.
