Dagur claims Thorstein and Jon deserve credit for the EEA agreement

Dagur B. Eggertsson argues that Thorstein Pálsson and Jón Baldvin Hannibalsson deserve recognition for their roles in the EEA agreement, which he believes were prepared before David Oddsson's involvement.

Dagur B. Eggertsson, a member of the Samfylking party, reflects on the positions of David Oddsson and the Independence Party regarding the EU and the EEA agreement. He posits that the groundwork for the EEA agreements was already laid secretly between Thorstein Pálsson and Jón Baldvin Hannibalsson before Oddsson assumed office as Mayor in 1991. Eggertsson asserts that many attribute the EEA agreements to Oddsson along with Hannibalsson, marking significant advancements for Iceland toward modernization.

In 1991, Oddsson and Hannibalsson formed the so-called Viðeyjarstjórn and later in 1994, Iceland became a member of the European Economic Area (EEA). Eggertsson challenges the simplification of assigning credit solely to these individuals, suggesting that the negotiations' foundations were created prior to Oddsson's entrance into the discussions. His comments bring to attention the often-overlooked contributions of Pálsson and Hannibalsson in shaping Iceland’s economic integration with Europe.

Eggertsson's perspective highlights the complexities surrounding historical narratives and how key figures are often recognized in public discourse. He encourages a reevaluation of the credit given for the EEA agreements, suggesting that a broader recognition is warranted for those involved in the behind-the-scenes negotiations that ultimately led to Iceland's membership in the EEA.
