Former player Piá arrested in Sumaré after fleeing from the Military Police

Former Brazilian football player Piá was arrested in Sumaré after evading the Military Police due to an open arrest warrant for fraud in betting.

Reginaldo Rivelino Jandoso, known as Piá, a 52-year-old former Brazilian football player with a history of playing for clubs such as Ponte Preta, Inter de Limeira, Santos, and Corinthians, was arrested on Monday night in Sumaré, São Paulo. His arrest came after law enforcement spotted him driving a vehicle and attempting to evade a police patrol, leading to a chase that ended with him crashing through a barrier in a condo. He was under an existing warrant related to a betting fraud case.

According to reports from the Military Police's Special Action Battalion (BAEP), the incident unfolded around 9 PM when officers identified a suspicious VW Polo driven by Piá, who was alone in the car. Upon noticing the police, he attempted to change direction and speed away, resulting in a police pursuit. Despite efforts by the police to initiate a traffic stop using sirens and lights, Piá's escape attempt ended with him crashing the vehicle, although he was not found in possession of any illegal items at the time of his arrest.

During his interaction with law enforcement, Piá admitted to fleeing because he was aware of the open arrest warrant against him. The situation not only draws attention to Piá's troubled post-football career but also highlights ongoing issues related to fraud in sports betting, raising questions about accountability and the impact of such activities on the integrity of competitive sports.
