Difficulties in Procuring Methanol from Saudi Arabia - Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Unable to Pass Through the Strait of Hormuz

Mitsubishi Gas Chemical announced difficulties in sourcing methanol from its Saudi supplier due to heightened tensions in the Middle East, which have hindered shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz.

Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, a leading chemical manufacturer in Japan, reported on the 3rd that they are facing challenges in procuring methanol, a crucial chemical raw material, from their Saudi Arabian supplier due to escalating tensions in the Middle East. Although the production facility in Saudi Arabia remains intact, shipments are unable to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, affecting the flow of this essential commodity.

Methanol, utilized in a variety of products including resins, adhesives, and as fuel for marine vessels, is vital for many industries. As one of the world's major methanol producers, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical's inability to secure consistent supplies could lead to significant repercussions, impacting industrial goods and even household products if the supply interruption persists.

The company does have procurement sources in four countries; however, most of its methanol supply comes from Saudi Arabia. In the meantime, it plans to rely on stored reserves within Japan and abroad while seeking to increase imports from alternative suppliers. They acknowledge, however, that future supplies may become increasingly difficult to guarantee, amid remarks from Iranian military officials threatening shipping safety in the region.
