Supo Wants Ordinary People to Become Spies
Finland's Security Intelligence Service is seeking ordinary citizens as intelligence agents in an unprecedented recruitment campaign focused on language skills.
The Finnish Security Intelligence Service (Supo) has launched a unique recruitment campaign in March, aiming to enlist ordinary Finnish citizens as intelligence agents. The agency emphasizes the need for candidates with strong language skills, prioritizing those who can speak Russian or Chinese. However, individuals fluent in French, Spanish, or other less common languages could also be suitable for this role. This marks a significant departure from traditional recruitment practices and aims at enhancing national security through community engagement.
The recruited intelligence agents will play a crucial role in Supo's intelligence operations both domestically and internationally, gathering information on threats to Finland's national security. The information will be sourced mainly through social interactions with identified informants. According to Pekka Hiltunen, head of Supo's intelligence division, the agency is seeking applicants from diverse backgrounds, emphasizing that candidates need not have prior governmental experience, but rather the ability to blend in and collect valuable information.
Applications must be sent by mail and should include relevant materials as outlined on Supo's official website. This recruitment drive reflects a broader trend of involving civilian participation in national security efforts, which could foster greater public awareness and understanding of intelligence work while addressing current security challenges Finland faces in a rapidly changing global landscape.
