Serious Well Incident at Troll Field

A serious well incident occurred at the Troll Field during plugging operations, leading to gas and liquid leakage and minor injuries to a worker.

An investigation into a well control incident at Troll Field has concluded, classifying it within Equinor's highest incident category. The event took place on September 23 of last year involving the drilling rig Deepsea Bollstad during the plugging of a well. A pipe was cut at a depth of 510 meters, resulting in a gas and liquid leak that spread to the drilling deck and mud treatment area. One person experienced difficulties escaping and suffered minor injuries.

Rune Nedregaard, director for drilling and well operations at Equinor, stated that the company views the incident very seriously due to the gas leak it caused. Witnesses described the situation as dramatic for those working at the site. However, he emphasized that safety barriers functioned effectively, preventing the incident from escalating further, which ultimately mitigated the potential impact on the crew.

Such incidents raise critical concerns regarding safety protocols in offshore drilling operations, especially in sensitive environments like the North Sea. As a result of this incident, Equinor will likely review and enhance their safety measures to ensure that similar events do not occur in the future, emphasizing their commitment to worker safety and environmental protection.
