Rubio: Israel's determination to attack Iran forced the US to go to war
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Israel's determination to attack Iran compelled the Trump administration to launch a pre-emptive strike.
In a press conference, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio articulated that Israel’s resolve to strike Iran created a situation where American forces were in jeopardy, pressuring the Trump administration into executing a preemptive military response. Rubio emphasized that it was evident that any aggression towards Iran, whether from Israel or the U.S., would elicit a retaliatory attack against U.S. forces, making pre-emptive action necessary to mitigate potential casualties.
Democratic lawmakers criticized Rubio's explanation for the war, highlighting that this conflict was initiated under Trump's choice without a clear strategy or objective. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer pointed out that it was a war of choice, rebuking the lack of strategic foresight. Additionally, Senator Mark Warner, the vice-chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, conveyed concerns that the U.S. allowed Israel to pull it into an unnecessary war, questioning the legitimacy of equating threats to Israel with tangible threats against the U.S.
In response to Rubio’s statements, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi contended that these comments confirm the U.S. willingly entered a conflict for the benefit of Israel. He argued that while Iran has posed threats to Israel, it has not directly threatened the U.S., suggesting that the perception of a threat to Israel does not necessarily translate to a direct threat to American interests, indicating a shift in the dynamics of U.S. foreign policy response to regional crises.
