Over 70% of Russian attack drones in Kyiv downed by interceptor drones in February
In February, over 70% of Russian Shahed-type attack drones targeting Kyiv were intercepted and destroyed by Ukrainian interceptor drones, highlighting the effectiveness of Ukraine's drone defense capabilities.
February saw a significant achievement for Ukrainian air defense, with more than 70% of Russian Shahed-type attack drones destroyed by interceptor drones over Kyiv and its surrounding areas. This figure, reported by Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, underscores the critical role of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the defense strategy against advancing Russian drone threats.
During a recent meeting focused on 'small air defence' systems, military leaders evaluated the success of the interceptor drones, which are classified within the first to third layers of Ukraineβs multi-tier drone interception strategy. The discussions also included ongoing projects aimed at bolstering anti-drone defenses, particularly enhancements to army aviation helicopters, which are being upgraded to counter the Shahed drones more effectively.
Despite significant challenges, including worsened weather conditions and a noted decrease in available strike capabilities, Ukrainian air defense has succeeded in maintaining a high level of performance for its 'small air defence' systems throughout February. The continued emphasis on enhancing the protection of critical administrative centers and refining aerial defense technology points to Ukraine's strategic focus on securing its airspace against ongoing Russian attacks.
