Establishment of Air Raid Relief Law in Current Diet Session: Victims' Press Conference 'Delays Are Unacceptable'

Air raid victims urge the Japanese government to pass a relief law without further delay during a press conference.

On December 3, the National Air Raid Victims Liaison Council in Japan held a press conference to emphasize the urgency of the Air Raid Relief Law during the current Diet session. They released the results of a survey conducted with various political parties ahead of the recent House of Representatives election, where seven parties, including the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, expressed their support for the timely establishment of this essential legislation for victims.

The Council's chairman, attorney Tetsuhiko Kuroiwa, highlighted the absence of political conflict over the issue, noting a cooperative sentiment across party lines aimed at giving the victims necessary relief. With the special Diet session perceived as the last opportunity for the law's passage, they urged political stakeholders to act swiftly to fulfill their commitments to the victims, ensuring that bureaucratic hesitations do not prolong their suffering.

The press conference featured testimonies from victims like 86-year-old Setsuko Kawai, who lost her mother and two younger brothers in the devastating Tokyo air raid of March 10, 1945. Kawai reinforced the notion that for victims, the impact of war is not just historical but an ongoing issue that deeply affects their lives today, conveying a sense of urgency against any further delays in the legislative process.
