Tram driver investigated: There's a mystery about the warning to the central station
The driver of a tram involved in a derailment in Milan, which resulted in two deaths and numerous injuries, is under investigation for railway disaster.
Document seizures were initiated by the Milan Public Prosecutor's Office as part of an investigation into a tram derailment that occurred on Friday in Viale Vittorio Veneto. The incident tragically resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injured around 50 others, some seriously. Local police executed a seizure order for technical documentation concerning Tramlink and communications between the driver and the transport company's operations center at the time of the accident, including recordings.
The 60-year-old tram driver, identified as Pietro M., is being investigated for railway disaster, road homicide, and serious injuries. He has claimed to have suffered a malaise while driving and has been discharged with a prognosis of ten days for head trauma sustained during the incident, alongside a diagnosis of vasovagal syncope—a brief loss of consciousness potentially triggered by stress or pain. Investigators are primarily focused on analyzing the communications and technical data to determine the circumstances leading to the accident.
The severity of the incident highlights serious concerns about public transportation safety and raises questions regarding the procedures and protocols followed by the transport company in emergency situations. As investigations continue, the outcomes could lead to stronger regulations and changes in operational practices to prevent future tragedies, underscoring the need for accountability in public infrastructure management.
