Illegal eel fisherman caught in Pori - 56 nets confiscated by the state, fines for the offender

A 62-year-old man has been sentenced for illegal fishing in Pori after using 56 illegal eel nets in a local river without permission.

In Pori, Finland, a district court has sentenced a 62-year-old man for committing a fishing offense by illegally setting up 56 nets to catch eels in the Harjunpäänjoki and Kokemäenjoki rivers last August. The man lacked the necessary permits required for using more than six nets, a violation that significantly hindered the movement of migratory fish in the waterway, and even entangled the motor of a boat navigating the river.

During the trial, the man defended his actions by citing carelessness, ignorance, and being in a hurry, claiming he was preoccupied with repairing his boat motor. Despite his reasoning, the court ruled against him, leading to confiscation of the nets valued at approximately 1,500 euros, which he sought to retain during the proceedings.

Ultimately, the court imposed a fine amounting to 30 daily fines, totaling 840 euros based on the offender's income. This case highlights ongoing issues surrounding illegal fishing practices and the importance of adhering to local fishing regulations to protect aquatic life and ensure sustainable fishing methods in Finnish waters.
