The number of asylum applications fell sharply in the EU last year
Asylum applications in the EU, Norway, and Switzerland saw a significant decrease last year, primarily due to fewer applications from Syria.
In a notable trend, the number of asylum applications in the European Union (EU), Norway, and Switzerland plummeted in 2025, with a reported 822,000 applications filed across these regions. This marks a sharp decline of 19% compared to the previous year, 2024. The decrease was largely attributed to a notable drop in applications from Syrian nationals, which fell from 151,000 in 2024 to approximately 42,000 in 2025. This significant reduction in asylum seekers from Syria is linked to the recent political developments in the country, particularly the removal of long-term leader Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, which has sparked hope among many Syrians for a better future.
