Joi Ito Mentioned in Epstein Documents; Minister Konoda Considers Hearing

Japan's Science and Technology Minister, Minister Konoda, announced on the 3rd that they are considering an inquiry and hearing regarding Joi Ito, who is mentioned in documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice related to Jeffrey Epstein.

Takahiro Takenouchi reports that following the release of over 3 million pages of documents by the U.S. Department of Justice pertaining to the late Jeffrey Epstein, Japan's Science and Technology Minister, Takumi Konoda, indicated during a press conference that an investigation regarding Joi Ito is under consideration. Ito is the president of Chiba Institute of Technology and has been an expert member of the Cabinet Office's committee since July of last year.

Jeffrey Epstein, a deceased American financier, was implicated in a sex trafficking scandal involving minors and committed suicide while in custody in 2019. The documents released in December revealed that more than 8,000 of them reference Joi Ito, which has raised serious questions about his involvement in Epstein's network. With this information surfacing, the Japanese government is now faced with scrutiny over Ito's continued role on the committee, which is part of a broader initiative aimed at fostering technology companies in Japan.

Minister Konoda acknowledged inquiries about whether Ito’s capacity in the government could be reassessed due to the implications of the documents. He stated that the administrative office is currently reviewing the situation and potential actions, with Ito’s term set to expire at the end of March. The involvement of a prominent educational figure in a scandal of this nature presents challenges for the government and may influence public perception regarding its oversight of ethical standards within its committees.
