Veteran firefighter with 19 years of experience dies four months after losing consciousness while fighting a fire

A seasoned firefighter in South Korea passed away after four months of unconsciousness following a fire incident during a rescue operation at an auto repair shop.

A firefighter from the Goyang Fire Station, Seong Chi-in, 48, tragically passed away on the afternoon of the 3rd, after being declared deceased following a prolonged period of unconsciousness. Seong had been engaged in firefighting efforts at an auto repair shop in the Deogyang District of Goyang City since November 24, 2025, where a fire broke out and rapidly spread. During the firefighting operations, Seong collapsed while working on the third floor, presumably where the fire originated. Fellow firefighters provided immediate CPR and transported him to the hospital, where he fought for life for four months but ultimately did not regain consciousness.

Since being appointed as a firefighter in December 2006, Seong was known for his extensive on-site experience and leadership abilities. He was a devoted family man with two teenage daughters and held significant trust and respect among his colleagues. Following the family's wishes, his funeral will be conducted privately. Fire authorities have planned to honor him with a burial at the National Cemetery, a posthumous promotion to the rank of Fire Chief, and the Green Cross Medal for his noble sacrifice. The Gyeonggi Northern Fire Disaster Headquarters expressed deep condolences, ensuring that honorable procedures would be meticulously followed in tribute to the fallen firefighter.
