The Ministry of the Interior and Safety Excludes Deoksoo Elementary School from Candidate Sites for the Construction of the Democracy Memorial Hall
The South Korean Ministry of the Interior has decided to exclude Deoksoo Elementary School from candidate sites for the Democracy Memorial Hall due to concerns over the educational environment of the students.
The South Korean Ministry of the Interior and Safety recently announced the exclusion of the playground of Deoksoo Elementary School in Jung-gu, Seoul, from the list of potential sites for the construction of the Democracy Memorial Hall. This decision comes after feedback from the school and parents, emphasizing the importance of ensuring quality learning environments for students. Initially, the Ministry and the Democracy Movement Memorial Foundation were considering several locations, including Deoksoo Elementary, as part of efforts to establish a new memorial to commemorate the struggles for democracy in South Korea.
Concerns had arisen following a report in February by Hankyoreh, highlighting that the construction of the memorial on the school’s playground could disrupt students’ physical activities and educational programs. The playground is owned by the Ministry of the Interior, and because the memorial foundation operates under this ministry, it was seen as a quick decision-making spot for the new memorial. However, after significant pushback from the school community, the Ministry reassured that it would prioritize the students' rights to an unhindered educational journey.
Moving forward, the Ministry of the Interior and the Democracy Movement Memorial Foundation will seek alternative sites for the memorial. They have committed to actively gathering input from related agencies and the public to find a suitable location. This action reflects a growing sensitivity to community concerns and an effort to balance the historical significance of the memorial with the everyday needs of local students.
