Behind the Request for Dissolution Order: 5,000 Pieces of Evidence Collected Unusually With Increased Personnel, Yet Problems Remain
The Tokyo High Court is set to decide whether to issue a dissolution order for the Unification Church, amidst unprecedented government scrutiny sparked by prior scandals.
The Tokyo High Court is scheduled to make a ruling on whether to order the dissolution of the Unification Church, known as the World Peace Unification Family Federation. This unusual request by the Japanese government is part of broader scrutiny that began after the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in July 2022. Following the incident, concerns over the church's fundraising practices and their impact on former members prompted the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to begin gathering information on the organization, leading them to review over 30 court rulings that mandated damage payments to former adherents who were coerced into making significant financial contributions.
The government's investigation uncovered troubling narratives about the church's practices, especially the way they allegedly exploited followers' fears regarding ancestral ties and spiritual bonds to induce heavy donations. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, responding to declining support rates for his administration influenced by revelations about connections between the church and certain ruling party members, directed inquiries to determine if there were grounds for questioning the church's legitimacy and integrity. As a result, the staff dedicated to this investigation grew from just eight to approximately forty, indicating the seriousness of the situation and the drive for thorough oversight.
Furthermore, as the case developed, the Ministry of Education took steps to fortify the investigatory team with legal and investigative experts drawn from the Ministry of Justice and other related areas, reflecting the increasing complexity of the unfolding issues surrounding the church. This expanding workforce highlighted the emphasis on confidentiality and urgency in addressing potential legal violations and ethical concerns tied to the Unification Church, which remains a focal point of national debate in Japan today.
