VU astronomer named an asteroid in honor of St. Casimir

A Vilnius University astronomer has named an asteroid after St. Casimir, reflecting the historical and religious significance of the figure in Lithuania.

An astronomer from Vilnius University has honored St. Casimir by naming an asteroid after him, highlighting the importance of this historical and religious figure to Lithuania. The asteroid, discovered in 2013 at the Baldone Observatory in Latvia by Dr. K. Černys and his colleague Dr. Ilgmārs Eglītis, will be prominently visible in the Pisces constellation near the Aquarius boundary this September.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by Dr. Černys to commemorate significant Lithuanian historical figures and saints through astronomical naming conventions. The Vilnius University reports that Dr. Černys has named over 150 asteroids, with around 100 having names associated with Lithuanian history or culture. The decision to honor St. Casimir was motivated by the importance he holds in Lithuania’s heritage.

However, the International Astronomical Union's regulations prevented the full recognition of St. Casimir's sanctity in the asteroid's name, resulting in it being simply called "Casimir." Despite this limitation, this naming showcases the ongoing efforts to celebrate Lithuania's cultural legacy among the astronomical community, following a trend of naming celestial bodies after historically significant leaders and figures from the region, such as kings and dukes from Lithuania’s past.
