Application for the first phase of investigation for nuclear waste disposal site at Minami-Torishima by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry
The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has requested to conduct the first phase of an investigation for a nuclear waste disposal site on Minami-Torishima.
The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has approached Masayuki Shibuya, the mayor of Ogasawara Village, on the 3rd of October, to propose conducting a literature survey as the first phase of the process for selecting a final disposal site for high-level radioactive waste from nuclear power plants on Minami-Torishima. This is set to be the fourth site investigated, following locations in Hokkaido and Saga Prefecture, if accepted. Mayor Shibuya has stated he will consider the proposal while taking into account the opinions of village residents and the village council.
A delegation from the Ministry visited Ogasawara Village on the afternoon of October 3rd and handed over a formal application to Mayor Shibuya. He mentioned the importance of assessing public sentiment on the proposal, indicating that the decision to accept the investigation will involve input from the community. The selection process for the disposal site is divided into three stages, starting with this literature survey that is expected to span approximately two years, followed by a preliminary survey involving actual ground excavation for around four years, and then a detailed investigation to be conducted underground taking an estimated fourteen years.
If the literature survey begins as proposed, it will mark a significant step in Japan's long-term strategy to manage high-level radioactive waste, amidst ongoing concerns regarding nuclear safety and the environment. This local investigation reflects Japan's continued search for suitable locations to safely manage its nuclear waste, highlighting the importance of municipal engagement and consent in the process.
