Nigeria: Gov't Begins Implementation of Executive Order On Oil, Gas Revenues
The Nigerian government has initiated the implementation of Executive Order 09 to enhance the management of oil and gas revenues.
The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially begun the implementation of the Oil and Gas Revenues Executive Order 09, as announced by the Minister of Finance, Mr. Wale Edun. A Technical Committee has been established to oversee the allocation of the revenues affected by this order into the Federation Account, ensuring adherence to the newly laid provisions. The inaugural meeting of the Implementation Committee was held on February 26, 2026, to set the groundwork for this significant financial restructuring.
Executive Order 09, issued by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aims to safeguard federal revenues and improve the oversight of petroleum revenue management in Nigeria. This move is seen as a critical step towards enhancing fiscal governance and ensuring that the country manages its natural resources more effectively. The Minister emphasized that the directive is aligned with constitutional principles to protect the revenues generated from petroleum operations, addressing long-standing concerns about transparency and appropriation in Nigeria's oil sector.
The establishment of this Technical Committee signals the government's commitment to reforming the revenue collection processes and enhancing accountability in financial management. As Nigeria grapples with economic challenges exacerbated by fluctuations in oil prices and global market dynamics, this Executive Order is aimed at fostering a more sustainable approach to managing the country's vast oil and gas resources, which are vital for its economy.
