Yellow Warnings in the Southwest
Yellow weather warnings have been issued for the southwestern region of Iceland, with snow and rain expected later in the day.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued yellow weather warnings for the southwestern part of the country today, starting from 9 AM and lasting until 1 PM. Conditions are expected to worsen as strong easterly and southeast winds of 13-20 m/s bring snowfall by noon, followed by rain or sleet in the afternoon. Meanwhile, the northern part of the country should experience lighter winds and minimal precipitation, as temperatures rise to around freezing or slightly above in the afternoon, particularly in the southern regions.
Visibility is anticipated to be poor in some areas, including Hellisheiði and Þrengslum, with snow drifts posing hazards to drivers, especially when gusts could reach up to 30 m/s in mountainous regions. This weather could lead to transportation disruptions. By evening, the winds are expected to shift to the south and southwest, with speeds dropping to 8-15 m/s, accompanied by showers in the southwestern part of the country, while brighter skies are expected to the northeast.
As temperatures hover around the freezing point tomorrow, residents and travelers are advised to remain alert due to potential travel disruptions caused by the adverse weather conditions. Areas such as Ölfus, Reykjavík, Árborg, and Mosfels will be particularly impacted by these conditions, necessitating precautions for those traveling or engaging in outdoor activities.
