Basti: Student murdered in her home, mother threatened with a gun

A 12th-grade student was shot dead in her home in Basti, Uttar Pradesh, and her mother was threatened by the attacker.

In Basti district, Uttar Pradesh, a shocking incident occurred on Monday night when a young student named Anushka, a 12th grader, was brutally shot dead in her home by a man named Mandeep. The attack happened while she was asleep on the porch with her brother; the assailant fired multiple shots, striking her in the head and chest. Her mother, who was awakened by the commotion, was also threatened with a firearm, but fortunately escaped unharmed when the gunfire missed her. Following the attack, Mandeep fled the scene, leaving the family in shock and grief.

The motive behind this heinous act appears to stem from a complicated history between Mandeep and Anushka, which involved an abusive relationship. Reports indicate that Mandeep had previously lured Anushka into a romantic involvement and had taken intimate photos and videos of her. However, when she attempted to distance herself from him, he retaliated by sharing these private images on social media, which led to a formal complaint lodged by her family. As a result, a case was filed against Mandeep under the IT Act and for sexual assault, prompting him to go into hiding.

Despite being on the run, Mandeep returned to the village and committed this horrific act of violence. The incident underscores the ongoing issues of harassment, digital abuse, and the dire consequences of failed romantic relationships in society. It also raises concerns about women's safety and the need for holistic legal protections against such violent crimes. Local authorities have opened an investigation, but the community remains shaken by the tragic loss of life and the potential danger posed by the assailant still at large.
