France increases the number of nuclear warheads

President Macron stated that it is his responsibility to ensure the destructive power of France's deterrents remains guaranteed as France increases its nuclear warheads.

French President Emmanuel Macron outlined his country's nuclear strategy, emphasizing the need to maintain the effectiveness of their deterrent forces amid rising global threats. He called for European partners to collaborate in implementing a new strategic defense system, which may involve temporarily deploying French nuclear-capable aircraft in allied nations. This signifies a shift towards a more proactive European defense posture in light of recent changes in U.S. defense strategies.

Currently, France is the only member of the European Union that possesses nuclear weapons, having up to 300 warheads available. Some EU member states have already embraced Macron's proposal made last year to discuss the use of these weapons for deterrence purposes. The development highlights the shifting dynamics within NATO and the EU regarding collective European security, as nations face new security challenges stemming from geopolitical tensions.

Recently, Macron held discussions with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on this matter, indicating a willingness among key European powers to reassess their nuclear strategies. Macron’s push for an enhanced nuclear strategy may facilitate stronger military cooperation within Europe and aims to bolster European sovereignty regarding defense issues, all while addressing the changing nature of global security threats.
