Renfe will jump into the bus market and create its own company in response to the wave of incidents on the tracks
Renfe plans to enter the bus transportation sector by creating its own company to address disruptions caused by railway incidents and improvements.
Renfe, the public railway operator in Spain, has announced its intention to expand into the bus transportation sector, creating a new company to handle alternative transportation solutions during expected disruptions due to scheduled improvements and unforeseen issues on its networks, particularly in suburban areas. This strategic move is in response to a series of recent incidents that have led to significant demand for alternative transport options from train users.
The new bus company will be a joint venture, with Renfe holding 49% of the capital and a yet-to-be-determined partner taking the majority stake of 51%. This initiative is expected to enhance Renfe's operational resilience by providing direct services to commuters affected by service interruptions, thereby reducing reliance on third-party transport solutions. The project has already been discussed in board meetings of Renfe and Renfe Viajeros as they seek a partner with experience in the bus sector.
By employing its own drivers and managing its fleet directly, Renfe anticipates saving approximately 130 million euros over the next ten years compared to leasing vehicles from external companies. This move not only signifies a shift in Renfe's operational strategy but also highlights the growing need for integrated transport solutions in Spain, particularly as the demand for efficient and reliable public transport continues to increase in urban and suburban areas.
