US says it sank 11 Iranian vessels in the Sea of Oman... Iran attacks US embassy in Saudi Arabia
The US claims to have sunk 11 Iranian vessels in the Sea of Oman following Iran's threats to attack oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz and drone attacks on the US embassy in Saudi Arabia.
On October 2, the US military announced that it had sunk 11 Iranian vessels stationed in the Sea of Oman. This action came immediately after Iran threatened to set ablaze 'all oil tankers' passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The Central Command (CENTCOM) of the US military mentioned on social media that just two days prior, 11 Iranian ships were present in the Sea of Oman, but as of now, none remain. The Sea of Oman is strategically located adjacent to the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route through which a significant portion of the world's oil supply is transported. In its announcement, CENTCOM not only declared an end to Iran’s threats but also released a brief video showing the sinking of the vessels.
The statement from the US military follows fierce rhetoric from Iranian officials, particularly from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which warned that they had already closed the Strait of Hormuz and would attack any oil tankers attempting to navigate through. Ebrahim Jabari, an IRGC commander, declared their willingness to target oil pipelines in the region, escalating tensions significantly. This direct confrontation is set against a backdrop of long-standing maritime conflicts involving Iran and international shipping in the Gulf region, which CENTCOM claims will no longer be tolerated.
In addition to maritime hostilities, the situation has been exacerbated by a drone attack launched by Iran against the US embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Wall Street Journal reported that the embassy was struck by two drones, causing minor fire damage and prompting the US embassy to issue evacuation orders for personnel in Riyadh and Jeddah. The Saudi Arabian Defense Ministry confirmed the drone strike, highlighting the ongoing volatility of the region and the direct implications of Iran's military actions against US interests and allies in the Gulf, marking a concerning escalation in military hostilities between the two nations.
