During Easter you can eat herring and still have it

This Easter, consumers can enjoy herring sustainably as more companies are shifting to eco-friendly alternatives.

As Easter approaches, Swedish consumers are being encouraged to enjoy herring with a clear conscience, thanks to a significant increase in the availability of sustainable herring options. The shift comes after the previous yearโ€™s concern over the unsustainable harvesting of the Norwegian spring-spawning herring, which was flagged with a red light in WWFโ€™s fish guide. This year, there has been a marked improvement, with many companies responding to consumer demand and environmental concerns by switching to more sustainable fisheries practices.

Gustaf Lind, the secretary-general of WWF Sweden, emphasized the positive impact of this shift, noting that it gives the Norwegian spring-spawning herring a chance to recover while demonstrating that responsible choices are feasible even in the present day. He highlights the role that consumers play in demanding sustainably sourced food and encourages people to look for the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) logo when purchasing herring. This certification is synonymous with sustainability and aligns with products rated green in the fish guide, further aiding consumers in making informed choices.

The change in market availability for sustainable herring not only promotes responsible fishing but also aligns with broader environmental goals. As more companies transition to eco-friendly options, it signals a growing awareness within the food industry of the importance of sustainable practices, providing hope that consumer demand can drive positive change in marine conservation.
