Supreme Court blocks California ban on notifying students' parents about gender transitions
The Supreme Court temporarily blocked California's law prohibiting schools from automatically informing parents if their children wish to change their gender identity without parental approval.
On Monday, the Supreme Court intervened to block a California law that mandated schools to refrain from notifying parents if students expressed a desire to transition genders. This ruling came in response to an emergency appeal from the Thomas More Society, a conservative legal group that argued the law infringed on parental rights by preventing parents from being informed about significant changes in their children’s lives. The blocked California law, which was signed by Governor Gavin Newsom in 2024, aimed to protect the privacy of students who might fear family rejection regarding their gender identity.
