15 US military aircraft left Spain after Madrid rejected Iran war

Fifteen US military jets departed from Spain after Madrid refused to allow their bases to be used for potential strikes against Iran.

Recent reports indicate that fifteen US military aircraft have left Spain, following a clear stance from the Spanish government that it will not permit the use of its bases for any military operations against Iran. The movement of these aircraft, noted by the flight tracking service FlightRadar24, included nine refueling planes departing from Morón airbase heading to Ramstein Air Base in Germany, a major hub for US air forces in Europe, highlighting the significance of this logistical maneuver.

Spain's Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, made it clear in a press conference that the Spanish bases are only intended for purposes outlined in the existing agreements between Madrid and Washington. Such statements underline Spain's efforts to maintain its sovereignty while navigating the complex geopolitics surrounding Middle Eastern tensions. Furthermore, two military aircraft from the Rota base were reported to have flown to southern France, while additional flights from Rota remained unaccounted for.

These developments point to Spain's critical position in international military strategy and underscore the country's cautious approach to becoming involved in conflicts. The Spanish Defense Minister, Margarita Robles, echoed the sentiment of non-involvement in actions not aligned with their defense agreements with the US, accentuating ongoing discourses about military presence and operations in Europe and the ethical implications of military collaborations with the US under the context of regional conflicts.
