Two children drown in Edo floodwater
Two children tragically drowned in a floodwater site in Edo State, Nigeria, while playing with other kids.
On Sunday, a tragic incident occurred in the Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria, where two children drowned while playing in a floodwater collection area. The children, along with two others, were reportedly playing near Erediauwa Street off Sapele Road in Benin City when the accident happened. Witnesses stated that the area, designed to collect floodwater, was extremely muddy, and despite warnings, the children ventured near the dangerous site.
As the children played, two of them slipped into the muddy water and, unfortunately, could not be resuscitated. The miraculous rescue of the other two children was facilitated by nearby witnesses who rushed them to a hospital where they received treatment. The incident sparked concern among local residents regarding safety measures in flood-prone areas, highlighting the need for proper signage and barriers to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Eno Ikoedem, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, confirmed the situation, emphasizing the swift response of rescue teams upon receiving reports. The tragedy underscores the risks posed by unregulated floodwater sites, urging authorities to reassess and implement protective measures to safeguard children and communities from similar incidents in the future.
