Iranian Ambassador to the UN: "The US and Israel target civilians. We only target military objectives"
The Iranian ambassador to the UN accused the US and Israel of targeting civilians in military operations against Iran, highlighting a recent alleged attack that resulted in civilian casualties.
The Iranian Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Amir Iravani, made remarks to reporters during the Security Council meeting discussing "children, technology, education, and conflicts", which is attended by the First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump. He claimed that on February 28, 2026, the US, in full coordination with Israel, launched a second deliberate and unprovoked military attack against the Islamic Republic of Iran, describing it as a "calculated act of aggression".
Iravani emphasized that "major cities and densely populated urban areas were targeted," leading to the deaths of hundreds of innocent civilians. He stated that these attacks represent a "blatant violation of the UN Charter, particularly Article 2(4)" and constitute a direct assault on the foundations of international law. Furthermore, he asserted that the aggression was clear and the responsibility was evident.
In reference to the emergency meeting of the Security Council, he highlighted that the facts were apparent and insisted that accountability should be established for the actions taken against Iran. This assertion reflects Iran's broader narrative of victimization amidst escalating tensions in the region, as well as the complexities surrounding the longstanding conflict involving Israel and its allies.
