Switzerland: Our diplomatic channel between America and Iran remains open

Switzerland has confirmed that it continues to serve as a diplomatic channel between the U.S. and Iran despite escalating tensions in the region.

On Monday, Switzerland stated that its diplomatic channel between the United States and Iran remains active, amidst the backdrop of intensified conflict following the onset of war between the U.S. and Israel against Tehran on February 28. The Swiss Foreign Ministry emphasized through a correspondence to Reuters that this channel is available to both parties and operates bilaterally, although specific details about its activities were not disclosed. Furthermore, all Swiss embassies in the region are reportedly still operational and assisting citizens requesting help.

Historically, Switzerland has acted as a neutral party representing U.S. diplomatic interests in Iran since the breakdown of relations in 1979, following the Iranian Revolution. The arrangement was formalized during the U.S. Embassy hostage crisis, allowing Switzerland to function as a 'protecting power' for American interests. Negotiations between the U.S. and Iran in Geneva, mediated by Oman, were taking place right before the recent military actions commenced, highlighting Switzerland's ongoing role in facilitating dialogue even as tensions escalate.

However, this diplomatic role has attracted criticism from various Swiss political figures who question the wisdom of maintaining such a designation given the current volatility of U.S.-Iran relations. They argue that the responsibilities of being a ‘protecting power’ in Iran require careful consideration, especially in the context of the recent war, as international relations become increasingly complex and fraught with risks for neutral actors.
